CMEGSA Executive Committee 2014~2015

*The team was elected by CMEGSA memebers in August 2014.

Saeed Nusri (President)

I am pursuing my masters in Chemical Engineering and my research is focused on the treatment and consolidation of oil sands tailings. Having been born and brought up in United Arab Emirates, I completed my BSc in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from the American University of Sharjah. While pursuing my undergrad, I was actively involved in committees of various clubs and I also ran as the vice president of public relations for the Chemical Engineering Society of the university - a position that involved tasks like acquiring sponsors for various events and promoting the club activities on the social media.

At the UofA, I am a GSA Councillor-at-Large and have acquired a position at the Labor Relations Committee and the General Faculties Council, which has been designated as the highest level of academic governance at the UofA. In addition, I am a graduate student representative at the Personal Protective Equipment Advisory Board that aims to enhance compliance in the use of PPE in the university laboratories. Also, being an active member of the Peers Program, International Activity for Student Groups funds allocation committee and volunteer leader of 2014 Transitions, I find myself holding a rather dynamic position at the International Student Services.

With these pertinent experiences, I aim to bolster CMEGSA’s mission of promoting communication between grad students, the department, and the University Administration whilst, most importantly, taking into account the interests and concerns of CME grad students.

Mohsen Mohammadijoo (VP Academics)

My major field of research is Materials Science and Engineering and now I am conducting a new approach to the current methods of welding of pipeline steels in particular microalloyed steels. I am currently a member of ABCampus and I would be dlighted to participated in volunteer activities in our department.

Elaheh Davari (VP Alumni & External Affairs)

My name is Elaheh. I was born and raised in the “Ancient land of Persia” (Iran). I obtained my BSc in material engineering at the Iran University of Science and Technology. My final thesis was concentrated on glass-ceramics for biomedical applications. I received my MEng degree from the University of Windsor in August 2012. Currently, I am second-year PhD candidate in chemical and material engineering department at the University of Alberta. I have been a part of the ABCampus executive team for almost two years, where I served as VP-events and committee member.

I have been involved in several event organization such as networking workshops, AVCatalyts, and BBQ. The goal of the events was to provide networking opportunities for students with each other and industry members. I have gained valuable professional communication skills by interacting with entrepreneurs and industry mentors. Furthermore, I was involved in organizing the conferences during my undergraduate studies. I served as VP-communication where I designed and maintained the website.

I am conducting research in the field of energy storage technologies. My research includes selection of non-precious materials as an alternative for Pt-based catalysts applied in metal-air batteries. This requires using various electrochemical and characterization techniques to study the candidate materials. Also, I have served as a teaching assistant (TA)for Materials Science II course for two semesters. During the TA sessions, I have learned valuable teaching skills by assisting students in the laboratory and discussing on assignments. My other skills and hobbies include, running, reading, pastel drawings, and playing Rubik’s cube!

Lin Chen (VP Communications)

I got a BSc degree in Chemistry in China (2013) and I used worked for the Student Union for two years when I was undergraduate. Before I graduated, I studied Chemical Engineering for one semester in Taiwan (2012), where I volunteered in Chung Tai Chan Monastery for 4 months. Here as a master student of CME at the UAlberta, I volunteered for Chinese Graduate Students Club, UAlberta Alumni & Friends, the Oil Sands Conference and participated in the 3rd Annual Engineering Art Show as an amateur artist. Besides, Iam a member of Fencing Club and practicing ice skating nowadays. Also, I am a Councillor of FGSR (Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research), the Planning Committee Member of the 4th Engineering Art Show.

I came to UAlberta one year ago to pursue my MSc degree and did research related to clay minerals. Recently, I transferred from MSc to MEng because of personal interest & needs under my supervisor’s permission. I am interested in the oil sands extraction processes or upgrading related research field. Now I am in charge of propaganda related issues, including build this website :-)

Kaveh Ahadi (VP Events)

I am Kaveh, I obtained both my bachelor and master in materials engineering from Iran. Commenced my PhD at University of Alberta from September 2013. I am currently doing my PhD under supervision of Dr Cadien on ultra-thin complex oxides for advanced electronic applications. I am working closely with other CME GSA members and hope to have an active term.

Sourabh Ahitan (VP Finance)

I am a chemical engineer by qualification, earned my bachelors from Nirma University, India in 2011. During my stint as a bachelor’s student at Nirma University, I actively contributed towards organizing numerous activities under the umbrella of Chemical Student’s Association (CheSA), ranging from hardcore technical events such as Paper Presentations to off-curriculum events as Documentary Film Making. I have worked as a Project Engineer in L&T, India's largest multi-national Engineering and Construction Company for around 2.5 years in the domain of Offshore Oil & Gas industry project management.

I joined UofA in Jan 2014. My research area is focused on phase behavior of Hydrocarbons and their rheological properties.

Zeinab Naderi Khorshid (VP Student Services)
